The Parish Council responded as follows to the LGRC on 25 March 2026:

Local Government Reorganisation in KENT & MEDWAY

Darenth Parish Council appreciates the chance to respond to the Local Government Reorganisation consultation for Kent and Medway.

Without independent resources, the Council's response references official submissions but emphasises its direct knowledge of local needs. The Council stresses that effective local representation is essential, regardless of reorganisation outcomes.

The Council supports Option 5A (proposed by Dartford and Gravesham Borough Councils), which would create five Unitary Authorities. It believes larger unitary models would distance decision-making from residents, reducing local engagement.

The Council strongly opposes Option 4D, as it would split some parishes between Unitary Authorities, complicating its operations and risking loss of community identity, unless future boundary reviews intervene.

More generally, the Council warns against centralising decision-making, which could erode valuable local knowledge. It insists Parish Councils must be properly supported, consulted, and empowered throughout reorganisation.

In summary, the Council:

  • Supports reform for efficiency and service delivery.
  • Backs Option 5A as best preserving community links.
  • Considers Option 4D unworkable for Parishes.
  • Stresses the need to protect local engagement and service access.
  • Calls for clearer information on reorganisation’s impact on Parish Councils’ roles and funding.

The above comments were approved by Members of Darenth Parish Council and submitted by the Clerk on behalf of the Council.
